Fabricating the right strategies-Roopak Malik, Textile Sourcing Ltd

Business acumen and industry insights have taken Roopak Malik’s company from a small domestic firm to the global level
For his sheer dynamism, Roopak Malik, Director of Textile Sourcing Ltd, is recognised as one of those entrepreneurs who have led their company towards success within a short time span. His New Delhi-based company deals with manufacturing, retailing and export of quality fabrics. Undaunted by challenges he encountered along the way, Mr Malik pursued his vision and proved his mettle through his unrelenting endeavours to provide the best to his clients.
Kicking off with the groundwork
Mr Malik always believed that in order to start an organisation, it is highly important to retain control over the organisation and at the same time be able to communicate with all his subordinates unhesitatingly. Mr Malik was primarily interested in the retailing business; however, he was not sure about the area of specialisation that would prove lucrative.
He completed his graduation in Economics from Delhi University in 1987. Thereafter, he realised that the apparel and garment segment could be a profitable business venture.
He took a job in a small textile firm. The association with this small firm helped him in conducting an in-depth market analysis. It gave him an idea about the financial dynamics of the apparel manufacturing segment and the consumer behaviour in the market.
To enhance his academic credentials, he also completed a post-graduation in Apparel Management from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in 1990. Thereafter, in 1994, he started his own apparel retailing and manufacturing business in New Delhi by laying the foundation stone of Textile Sourcing Ltd.
Broadening the horizons
Mr Malik says, “I saw that sweeping changes were taking place in the general apparel retailing business. I also found that India was dotted with multiple low-cost kiosks. Hence, I immediately realised that the competitive landscape for the apparel retail business was fast expanding along with the ready-to-wear market segment.”
Amidst this, Textile Sourcing Ltd, under the skilful administration of Mr Malik, started gaining pace. Mr Malik’s strong expertise had led him to enter the export business as well.
Today, the company’s products sell not only in retail stores in India but abroad as well. Some of the key retail chains where the company’s products are available include Bloomingdales, Austin Reed, Macy’s, Target, Marshall Field’s, Miss Selfridge’s, Tesco and Wal-Mart.
Wide networking
With Mr Malik’s experience and adequate domain knowledge, it was not a very improbable situation for him to expand his business. In addition, he led a dexterous team which was capable of handling all the obstacles that could have hindered the company.
Product pricing was done skilfully by Mr Malik and this generated maximum revenue for the company. Mr Malik had widespread experience from the overseas markets such as the US, Indonesia, Hong Kong and China as well. This industry knowledge fetched the company increased margins. Today, the company has a strong supplier base in Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Egypt and the UAE.
Planning ahead

In the present unfavourable economic situation, Mr Malik has not stepped out to explore new ventures for his company in the near term. However, he chalks out each business move in a precautious manner and proposes to set up his company’s branches in Italy and Germany in the future.
